Summer break - mountain wood art crafting

The craftsmanship typical of the Alps has its roots in the rural culture of the Alps. The traditional way of life of mountain people involved for each of being both a farmer and rancher, in order to make the most of the limited resources of a territory avaricious, and to become in case of need also craftsman, as the city markets were distant and high prices in relation to the limited financial resources. From here the need to produce in their own home, as far as possible, the tools necessary for the work of the fields and home use.Countless generations of farmers-craftsmen so elaborate, through the centuries, various techniques to make the most of certain agricultural and livestock products: hemp, wool and leather, and to make better use of raw materials that nature offered in large quantities: the wood and stone.
The industry, being the tools of necessities now imported and mechanized agriculture, have been able to diversify in recent decades, to a craft art whose creations are continuing to diversify and refine.

L'artigianato tipico della Valle d'Aosta affonda le sue radici nella civiltà contadina delle Alpi. Il tradizionale stile di vita dei montanari implicava per ciascuno di essere al tempo stesso agricoltore ed allevatore, al fine di sfruttare al meglio le risorse limitate di un territorio avaro, e di diventare in caso di necessità anche artigiano, dato che i mercati cittadini erano distanti e i prezzi alti in rapporto alle limitate disponibilità finanziarie. Da qui la necessità di produrre direttamente a casa propria, per quanto possibile, gli attrezzi necessari per il lavoro dei campi e l'uso domestico.
Innumerevoli generazioni di contadini-artigiani hanno così elaborato, attraverso i secoli, molteplici tecniche per sfruttare al meglio certi prodotti dell'agricoltura e dell'allevamento: la canapa, la lana e il cuoio, e per utilizzare al meglio le materie prime che la natura offriva in quantità abbondante: la legna e la pietra; senza dimenticare inoltre che un importante attività estrattiva forniva ai fabbri della regione del rame e soprattutto del ferro di eccellente qualità.
Gli operatori del settore, essendo gli utensili di prima necessità oramai importati e l'agricoltura meccanizzata, hanno saputo in questi ultimi decenni riconvertirsi, verso un artigianato d'arte le cui creazioni non cessano di diversificarsi e di raffinarsi.
